They started putting icing which was made with a mixture of some flavorings, egg whites, and sugar. They also adorned it with fruits that were dried. In the later centuries, cakes continue to develop as baking skills developed as well. In the 1800s, cakes were refined. Instead of yeast, they used flour and baking powder for baking. Instead of traditionally boiled icing, the use of buttercream frostings became a refinement. They also started using sugar and chocolates as sweeteners. Later on, in the 20th century, cakes continue to face refinement. This century was facing a very fast development of technology.
The invention of ovens that has temperature control has given another refinement and would pave the way to the perfection of cakes. It did not only make the bakers’ job easier and convenient but it greatly contributed to the mass production of cakes. Baking skills were developed and new innovative flavors were integrated too. Because of these, cake production has fastened and doubled making them cheaper and readily available at stores. If cakes in the past were only for the rich and elite people, today, people from different classes can easily afford to buy and eat cake.
