If there is one food that will never miss any celebration, it would be cake. Birthdays, weddings, family gatherings and the like, the cake will always be on the table. It seems like a celebration would be incomplete if there is no cake. There is something in the cake that makes the celebration special. From the different parts of the world and cultures, a cake is always part of any celebration. It is probably the world's favorite dessert. From children to teenagers, to adults, and the elderly, the sweetness that cakes bring to the taste will always be nostalgic. But here is a good trivia, people's affinity for cakes was not only recent, yet it did not only start when advertisements and cake shops become a thing. So when did this affinity for cakes start? Perhaps, how cakes started? The History The cake that the world knows today is different from its origin. Who would have thought that this sweet dessert started from thousand years ago? The word cake is derived from the Vikings, from the Norse word ‘kaka.' However, it is not only the Vikings who had early cakes. Ancient civilization in Egypt is the first to enhance their baking abilities. Their cakes were bread sweetened with honey. Aside from the Egyptians, the Greeks had developed the earliest form of cheesecake. Later on, as the Roman civilization flourished, they were able to bake fruitcakes. They placed it with fruits, nuts, and raisins. As the centuries advanced with technology, cakes were usually baked in Europe around mid 16000s. It marks the start of modern cakes, the same as what the world knows of today. They started putting icing which was made with a mixture of some flavorings, egg whites, and sugar. They also adorned it with fruits that were dried. In the later centuries, cakes continue to develop as baking skills developed as well. In the 1800s, cakes were refined. Instead of yeast, they used flour and baking powder for baking. Instead of traditionally boiled icing, the use of buttercream frostings became a refinement. They also started using sugar and chocolates as sweeteners. Later on, in the 20th century, cakes continue to face refinement. It did not only make the bakers' job easier and convenient but it greatly contributed to the mass production of cakes. Baking skills were developed and new innovative flavors were integrated too. If cakes in the past were only for the rich and elite people, today, people from different classes can easily afford to buy and eat cake.
